How do I get a copy of a past tax return?
For most needs, a free IRS transcript works in place of a copy. You can get one through your IRS Online Account, the Get Transcript tool or Form 4506-T. A full photocopy of the return uses Form 4506, which has a fee shown on the IRS page. Your tax software or preparer may also have a copy.
Transcript or copy
A return transcript shows most line items from the original return. An account transcript shows changes and payments after filing. A wage and income transcript lists W-2 and 1099 data the IRS received.
When lenders ask
Many lenders use Form 4506-C through the IRS Income Verification Express Service. You sign it, and the lender sends it to the IRS.

How do I get an exact copy of my return?
Use Form 4506. The IRS page shows the current fee and processing details.
